Surviving the Shift to Algorithmic Orthodontics.

Over the past 20 years, Ortho.i® have developed KOL networks with the largest dental corporations, built undergraduate and postgraduate curricula with universities, led advisory boards, and conducted speaker training programs around the world.

This journey has given us the knowledge, strategic vision, and real-world expertise necessary to responsibly integrate new technologies into modern orthodontic practices.

Think about it. You don’t buy a car and expect it to give you a driver’s license afterward. We do the opposite, we first gain the knowledge, complete the proper training, and develop the skills before we ever drive. In fact, driving without approved training and a license is illegal.

The same principle must apply in orthodontics.

It is not advisable to purchase an orthodontic’s appliance and attempt to acquire the necessary expertise during the course of treatment. Proper education and clinical preparation should precede implementation to ensure safe, effective, and responsible patient care. That mindset has led to mistakes in education in the past.

Today, with artificial intelligence, we are choosing a more responsible and logical path.

Can Artificial Intelligence Be Responsibly Adopted Without Structured Education?

We are now developing AI systems with education at the center of their design.

It is not ideal to introduce a new technology first and then rely on weekly webinars or launch events simply to onboard doctors. While this may be an effective marketing and sales strategy, it does not represent the most appropriate educational pathway for the responsible adoption of AI in orthodontics.

There is nothing inherently wrong with marketing and sales–driven educational events. In fact, for corporations, this is often the natural path, they are structured to be profitable organizations, and product promotion is part of their core strategy.

"The integration of artificial intelligence into clinical practice requires structured training, guided implementation, and a strong ethical foundation. Education must precede and accompany innovation to ensure responsible use." Prof. Dr. Adriano Araujo, Phd.

Education-first. We learn first. We develop skills. We build clinical reasoning. And only then do we apply.

Ortho.i® GPT is exclusively available to doctors enrolled in our orthodontic AI educational platform called Mind7, where they undergo supervised training within a structured curriculum. This approach includes in-person Sprint experiences and continuous online education.

However, the real shift must come from us, orthodontists, professors, educational leaders, and professional organizations. It is our responsibility to lead the profession with the appropriate guardrails, ethical standards, and strategic guidance.

Responsible Integration of Artificial Intelligence

The American Association of Orthodontists (AAO) took an important step by publishing a 46-page document builded under 96 published references titled “Responsible Integration of Artificial Intelligence in Orthodontic Clinical Practice.” This signals that governance and responsibility must accompany innovation.

The AAO paper is not regulatory law but serves as a professional standard and ethical guide for selecting, implementing, and monitoring AI technologies in orthodontic practice.

You find more information at the link below, where you can download the full paper and listen to a casual, AI-generated podcast discussing its key points, practical insights, and real-world scenarios.

Orthodontists need to become more selective and more conscious before integrating new technologies into their practices. Acquiring AI expertise is no longer optional, it is essential to guide our teams, protect our patients, and shape the future of our specialty.

Everything begins with us. Not with corporations. Not with organizations. With orthodontists.

Before stepping fully into this new Age of Artificial Intelligence, which is still only at its beginning, we must first develop the right mindset, the right knowledge, and the right leadership posture.
